The Other Side of Time is a fluid and immersive narrative project exploring the ways that the transcendence of linear time can coincide with blackness and liberation. Using an afro surrealist lens, I referenced dream logic and ancestral communication as guiding concepts.

The project aims to challenge the idea of form, linear structure, and perfection while also creating an abstract narrative about a character who learns to embrace being formless and unrestricted in darkness and outside of linear time.

The narrative takes the form of 14 illustrations that are structured with no strict beginning or ending so they they can be read as a cycle rather than a linear narrative. There are also 4 short dream sequences/premonitions made with found footage, music, and handmade animations to abstractly correspond with the 4 different parts of the narrative.

The illustrations, dream sequences, and a research archive can all be found at https://readymag.com/theothersideoftime/thesis/

Full cycle of illustrations

Part 1: Premonition Our main character notices a shift in her reality. She receives premonitions and wisdom coming to her. She feels called towards something in the desert and decides to follow it.

Part 2: Alignment (intended to be displayed vertically)

Our character made her way out into the desert and as she’s walking, she aligns with the moon and experiences a fully dreamlike state. she is visited by the presence of her ancestors and they deliver an abstract message to her.

Part 3: The VisionOur character has been drawn towards the desert and experienced an alignment at the hands of her ancestors. it all culminates here where she gets fully immersed into an abstract vision, showing her that her ancestors developed the ability to move across time freely and enter a new space of their own, and that she also possesses this ability.

Part 2: Alignment (intended to be displayed vertically)

Our character starts exploring things with her new power but not long after, she’s pulled away by a mysterious force because it’s threatened by the liberation she’s found in moving freely across time.

However, she closes her eyes, goes within her space, and realizes that no matter what, she always has her deep ancestral ability to be free in the darkness and outside of linear time. Then the story restarts as a cycle of her discovering this power through her ancestors, being challenged by those who are threatened by it, but always coming home to herself and her space in the end.
